This guide focuses on dogs and cats travelling between Denmark and the Faroe Islands. Requirements vary according to the route, the animal’s origin and whether the owner travels with it.
The checklist below helps you prepare your enquiry. The final transport and document requirements must be confirmed for each journey. Requirements for other animals must be checked separately.

About the journey and the people involved
- Departure point, destination, preferred travel date and any alternative dates.
- The name, address, telephone number and email address of the owner, sender and recipient.
- Will the owner or another person accompany the animal? Provide the owner’s travel dates and tell us whether the animal will be sold or change ownership.
- List every country the animal has been in during the past six months and any planned stopovers. Tell us whether this is a relocation or a return journey.
About the crate
- The crate’s length, width and height in centimetres. Provide its weight and the combined weight of the crate and animal. A photograph of the crate is also helpful.
- Have the animal’s measurements ready: length from nose to base of tail, standing height and width.
- The animal must be able to stand and sit upright, turn around and lie down naturally. Ask the carrier to confirm that the crate meets its requirements before buying it.
About the documents
- Have the pet passport, vaccination records and any permits ready. Tell us which documents you already have and which are still needed.
- Check with your vet when vaccinations, treatments and the health examination must take place. Also agree who will keep the original documents with the animal.
From Denmark to the Faroe Islands — dogs and cats
- If you live in or are moving to the Faroes, you can apply to Heilsufrøðiliga starvsstovan for permission to bring your dog or cat. Ordinary tourist travel with a dog or cat is not permitted; specific exceptions apply to certain assistance and service dogs.
- The application and vaccination certificates must normally be submitted at least six working days before departure; Saturdays do not count. The health certificate must be submitted two working days before departure, and the clinical examination must be no more than two days old at departure. Coordinate the timing with your vet and the authorities.
- Vaccinations other than rabies and treatment for parasites are also required. The initial required vaccinations must normally have been given at least four weeks before arrival in the Faroes. The animal’s origin and route may affect the conditions.
From the Faroe Islands to Denmark — dogs and cats
- For ordinary non-commercial travel, compliant identification, a valid rabies vaccination and a pet passport are required. Denmark also accepts pet passports issued in the Faroe Islands. After the first rabies vaccination, there is normally a waiting period of at least 21 days.
- Do not assume that non-commercial travel rules apply if the animal travels alone or changes ownership. Provide the owner’s travel dates: the connection to the owner’s journey and the five-day limit affect which rules apply.
- If the animal will return to the Faroe Islands, also have the travel permit and return conditions confirmed by Heilsufrøðiliga starvsstovan before departure.
